Artist Statement

The Pure Terror series was made with equal parts neuroticism and photoshop wizardry. It began with a simple question: “What if I remove the subject from these paintings of the sublime so that all is left is the massive indifference of nature?” This series is a playful yet critical attempt to challenge the ideologies perpetuated by historic sublime paintings. I erase the subjects in these paintings (usually white men) to challenge and rethink ideals like: progress, the ability to control and make sense of the world, and the heroic stance of the white man at the edge of what will soon become his. The erasure is an attempt to imagine new horizons by adopting alternative perspectives in the context of our relationship to nature and the unknown.
