Waking Up At Night
We are the space between here and hell Dark-water bodies that never see the light of day
When our mouths are shut tightly, We are Erebus, darkness that made the bright of day.
Like hyphens that hold two words We are the the makers of meaning that have none,
Or are crushed in between. Human Beings that cower to cover at the sight of day.
Beings laying side by side curled up We look like two commas under sheets, no
Like quotation marks with no speech. We punctuate light; huddle closer to fight off day.
Read me a story or sing me a lullaby, If it isn’t in your voice then the words will haunt me
They won’t put me to sleep tonight, No voice soft as yours, soft like the moonlight of day.
I have finally put myself in danger A mouth will open by the window at dawn and
To embrace the sharp beams of light Zubair will swallow whole the knife of day.
