for Derek Teaney

Sessile

or slow-moving animals

in the path of discharges

equipment and building materials

will be destroyed

some aquatic animals

may be smothered

by the placement of fill material

activities that alter

the riparian zone

especially floodplains

may adversely affect populations

of fish and other aquatic animals

by altering stream flow

flooding patterns

and surface

and groundwater

hydrology

thinking   like glaciers

keeps the body

numb to the bullets’ cauterizing

a device of anesthesia   you   yes

a construct of adrenaline and repetition

never had a fighting chance   the story

in the fine print   muzzled

search engine optimized   becoming

word count and reading time

the margins   the hinterland

will disappear   and

stranded there   the throng

of deportees   will become a flood

of memory   of their own

glacial past

tension   resisting the external forces

on which the smallest things walk

will be the killing machine
